The Eastern Kentucky African American Migration Project is a participatory archive constructed from the ground up, through the personal donations of African Americans who share a social heritage with the Appalachian region. This unique archive will be preserved in the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
There are many ways to participate in the project. You can…
Contribute to the archive:
- Individual Level Donors: Individuals can choose to donate materials and artifacts that represent their personal life history. Donations may include materials such as documents relating to his or her upbringing in eastern Kentucky, educational attainment, migration, or their career trajectory.
- Family Level Donors: Families can collaborate by submitting a group donation on behalf of their family history. In addition to individual-level materials, these donations may also include materials related to the family’s journey in a broader historical context, such as documents relating to their parents’ life history.
- Organizational Level Donors: Organizations will have the opportunity to contribute materials relating to the history and function of the organization as it relates to the African American experience in eastern Kentucky. Examples of potential organizational donors are chapters of the Eastern Kentucky Social Club and African American churches that existed in the communities.
